Der FROM HERE TO FAME Verlag widmet das ON THE RUN Buch Nummero 16 der GRAFFITI HALL OF FAME New York, einer der wenn nicht die älteste legale Graffitifläche überhaupt. VULCAN, JEAN13 und DJ Kayslay aka DEZ haben damals im Jahr 1981 eines der ersten Top2Bottom Murals an den Schulhofwänden in Spanish Harlem angebracht (siehe Foto oben). DEZ war es auch welcher zusammen mit Ray Rodrigues und PART1 von der TDS Crew 1980 die ersten Genehmigungen für die Flächen erhielt, so zumindest wurde uns das mal in New York berichtet. Martha Cooper sagte kürzlich über die HALL OF FAME in der Mutterstadt: “the schoolyard has lost its gritty, urban feel in recent years” was wir auch bestätigen können. Wenn man sich die zum Teil über 30 Jahre alten Fotos anschaut und sieht welche Anziehungskraft dieser Ort früher hatte ist der Unterschied zu heute klar zu erkennen. Vorausgesetzt man war in den letzten Jahren mal in New York. Das Buch von Autor Alain Ket Mariduena zeigt auf 208 Seiten die Geschichte der Hall of Fame an der 106ten Ecke Park Avenue, in 450 Fotos und Texten (engl) ! Darunter viele Collagen und Styles von zahlreichen Altmeistern wie Noc167, Dez, Ces, Virus, Wen, Wane, Part, Futura2000, T-Kid, Revolt, der TATS Cru und vielen mehr! The birthplace of the style writing school of graffiti is New York City. This is the place where young writers first began to transform letters from simple tags on a wall to elaborate masterpieces of colorful and camoflauged letters embellished with characters that depicted friends and heroes alike. By the 1980s the artwork was quickly destroyed by authorities and the artists seeking to preserve some of their works took hold of schoolyards around the city to paint grander works. It was a no-nonsense approach to save their art form and spread their fame to the local kids. The most famous of these schoolyards is located in East Harlem on 106th street and Park Avenue and it became known as the Hall of Fame. At first the Hall of Fame was established to bring together the best artists in the city and have them paint in the same schoolyard supplanting the number 5 train as the showcase place for the best graffiti art in New York.
