The two german graffiti artists Markus Genesius and Mirko Reisser better knowns as WOW123 and DAIM recently collaborated on a group exhibition entitled DIALOGUE – LONG DISTANCE. The two are part of the same graffiti generation and started graffiti in the ´80s, painted numerous walls together in the past 20 years and know each other for a long time. This exhbition project was established in 2015 with its first edition to facilitate a direct exchange between the artist from Bremen, Germany (WOW123) and his international contact. Some of you might remember another collaboration project WOW123 was involved in, when working together with ATOM ONE on a canvas series titled SIMILARITIES. Here is what the Gallery explains about LONG DISTANCE:

„The idea is to support the international networks of the Bremen art scene by making existing relations visible and by encouraging an artistic dialogue in situ in an exhibition. Markus Genesius is an artist from Bremen who has been a protagonist of the international Urban Art scene for many years. He has worked in numerous cooperations with other artists. In recent times he transferred his urban graffiti art increasingly into institutions and media of the traditional visual arts. As his supraregional contact he has asked Mirko Reisser to participate in this DIALOGUE to work together in the spaces of the Städtische Galerie Bremen. Both artists are in close contact for many years, did public projects together, and took a similar development as to their changing relation towards art institutions. For the Städtische Galerie Bremen they will deal with the huge exhibition spaces that architecturally were determined by their former industrial use. As representatives of an art medium that has gained importance and visibility Mark us Genesius and Mirko Reisser will adapt the special qualities of their public art form for the institutional frame of an exhibition space. Just like in the first DIALOGUE by Mia Unverzagt (Bremen) and Anna Gaskell (New York) the exhibition will enable a close cooperation between the artists, which will result in joint art works that exceed the basic idea of making visible the references between two artistic positions. A publication is planned to capture the results of this DIALOGUE and the specific achie vements within the spaces of the Städtische Galerie.“

From the Gallery´s press release (german):

Man braucht diesen Text.

170 Artists Invade a Giant Empty Bank Building in Berlin – THE HAUS [PREVIEW] http://ilovegraffiti.de/blog/2017/02/13/100-artists-invade-a-5-storey-bank-building-in-berlin-the-haus-preview/ http://ilovegraffiti.de/blog/2017/02/13/100-artists-invade-a-5-storey-bank-building-in-berlin-the-haus-preview/#comments Mon, 13 Feb 2017 18:13:58 +0000 http://ilovegraffiti.de/?p=26760 [more]]]> 15590662_1811196845759927_12603248112581588_n

Through our network we heard little stories and rumours about a new project in Berlin called THE HAUS. Only a few discreet photos have popped up here and there so far, so we went there to check out THE HAUS on Sunday for a short preview report. Here is what we were able to get away with from this secretive project scheduled to open in April 2017.

DSC02515-WPTHE HAUS gonna be a temporary gallery in the heart of Berlin that is going to showcase the essence of art by exposing it to irreversible destruction. Temporary means that when the project is over it’s not coming back. Never. THE HAUS is curated by the team behind XI-DESIGN better know as the THE DIXONS collective. Somehow they managed to enter an old empty 5 story bank building for 4 months before its demolition (see picture above) starting January 2017. So, what to do with this possibility? Let´s fill the whole building with its numerous rooms and countless space with art. That´s one crazy idea, and believe it or not, its reality now. It is at this point the THE HAUS – the BERLIN ART BANG is born.

„THE HAUS is going to be a multi-sensual adventure that will stick in the memories of all those who witness it. A collective of chosen artists and partners will create an exceptional space without borders.“

More than 170 artists were invited to realize themselves and their concepts in rooms that belongs completely to them. „The idea doesn’t matter“ they say, „as long as it’s dope“.

„A place full of libertines who dedicate themselves pursuing this one perfect moment. The moment you have to talk about because a picture is not enough to explain it.“

We came there in the early morning of Sunday, February, 13th, 2017 to check out the very last day of the workspace period, which started in January 2017. By talking to artists and discovering the 5 floors with rooms filled with very different kind of art, we realized little by little that this is not an ordinary artist camp or project. From Graffiti Art to Tape Art, Stencil Art, Installation, Illustration and object works, projections, it´s just one crazy mix of art compiled in a very special presentation. Of course we have seen similar ideas executed in old abandoned buildings (IBUG, CONS SPACE…) but we are pretty sure this is something new to everyone of you, and its very entertaining.

Bildschirmfoto 2017-02-13 um 18.54.44

While staying there for a full day we saw work in progress by ROCCO AND HIS BROTHERS, HERAKUT, the 1UP Crew, SEMOR, one great room designed by the SUPER BAD BOYS, STOHEAD, BASE23, AKTE ONE, CREN, BOND, DR.MOLROK, HRVB, DXTR & VIDAM, QUINTESSENZ, GOGO PLATA, INSANE51, INNERFIELDS, I LOVE YOU, KLEBEBANDE, TURBOKULTUR, MARIO MANKEY, MICHA KOCH, MISTER WOODLAND, CAPARSO, ONE TRUTH and many more. A very interesting line up and it´s not the names making the line up interesting, it´s the work you can discover in THE HAUS! We had the feeling that every very single artist went there with a strict and very serious agenda to create works. No matter if all this will be demolished from end of May on, its part of the whole concept.

16583372_1933107803585166_8771823841350516736_n

It was strictly forbidden to take photos of finished artworks so you will not see the entire show online at any time before the show is running, the team told us they will publish a book about the whole project. Maybe it’s finished for the opening! We managed to bring home some detail shots posted below but believe us, that´s not nearly what to expect for the opening.

THE HAUS opens it doors to the public April, 1st, 2017 and is possible to visit the next 2 months till end of may. Make sure you invest a few hours and take a look!

With big respect to the XI DESIGN team we wish all the best for the opening and we will report again online latest in April 2017!

Back to the RADIUS Group Exhibition:

„In classical geometry, the radius of a circle is any of the line segments from its center to its perimeter. The works of 15 different artists will show the complexity of the urban art scene as well as the extensive effect of different urban art genres in Germany. By invitation of the director of Urban Nation Yasha Young, Boris Niehaus (JUST), Christian Hundertmark (C100) and Rudolf David Klöckner (URBANSHIT) will curate the show together. All three curators are involved in the urban art scene in Germany in various ways.“

EXHIBITION – „For Your Eyes Only“ – MASON Solo Show in Soest, Germany http://ilovegraffiti.de/blog/2017/01/24/exhibition-for-your-eyes-only-mason-solo-show-in-soest-germany/ http://ilovegraffiti.de/blog/2017/01/24/exhibition-for-your-eyes-only-mason-solo-show-in-soest-germany/#comments Tue, 24 Jan 2017 16:24:48 +0000 http://ilovegraffiti.de/?p=25762 [more]]]> Mason-Dortmund-2016-865x577

Graffiti artist Mason is known for his affinity for a graphic style with geometric traits and for typographic constructions. His continuous orientation on nearly mathematical structures is highly influenced by his father being an architect, a heritage he continues to draw from even today. Using his own name as the core of and medium for his works, he creates typographic constructions following definite rules, such as the regular width of beams and gaps in between them, in order for the symbiosis of the letters to be as attuned as possible.

Left-Mason-A1-2016-Right-Mason-Circle-2016

Brought together by love for graffiti and street art, the two young entrepreneurs Patrick Droste and David Radon founded the gallery Art is Just a Four Letter Word in Soest in Germany with a goal to communicate this particular lifestyle and feeling. The unusual name for the gallery was drawn from the Joan Baez’s song Love is Just a Four Letter Word. The gallery presents the Mason’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Titled For Your Eyes Only, the exhibition will feature the latest body of work by this prolific artist.

The exhibition will be on view at the gallery from February 18th until March 18th, 2017.

BERLIN – TOY CREW Exhibition – Zwei Drei Raum Kreuzberg http://ilovegraffiti.de/blog/2016/08/25/berlin-toy-crew-exhibition-zwei-drei-raum-kreuzberg/ http://ilovegraffiti.de/blog/2016/08/25/berlin-toy-crew-exhibition-zwei-drei-raum-kreuzberg/#comments Thu, 25 Aug 2016 10:02:40 +0000 http://ilovegraffiti.de/?p=25391 [more]]]>

Graffiti crew TOY from Berlin (Das schöne Haus) will be exhibiting for the first time from 10th to 11th of September 2016 in Zwei Drei Raum, Berlin Kreuzberg (Gitschiner Str. 20-22). A debut exhibition with large format canvases, installations, video screenings and live music. The opening will take place on Saturday, September 10th at 18:00 (FB Event)

„For this exhibition, Berlin based writers ROZER, IGIT, SPIRIT, LOFK, Viktor Treshkow and Max Grambow have come together to create new ways of experiencing graffiti art. Usually confined to street bombing and train painting, they adapted their own graffiti approach to a gallery setting. The graffiti aesthetics, the illegality of it, the flow and freshness of their style remain and can be felt through their canvases, videos and installations. Ultimately, the viewer should be able to understand the motivations behind TOY’s actions and grasp the subtlety, humor and honesty of their style. Artists included are among the biggest players of Berlin’s graffiti scene, with crews like TLS, CTM, CMD, TBR, IMK, to name just a few.“

Artist group TOY represents a careless youth, trying to explore adventurous ways of living. The notion of danger builds a strong sense of community and fuels their artistic expression. Their collaboration goes beyond the attempt to be against the system: it is about belonging to a youth movement, a group of friends that gathers together to shape new urban landscapes. It is also about expressing one’s freedom in an over-regulated world. Freedom to navigate in a city, to break rules and create new aesthetics, removed from conventional artistic codes.

Here is another nice teaser just went online.

The Kolly Gallery Zürich presents a solo exhibition by the German artist collective MOSES & TAPS™. The exhibition takes place from June 16 to July 16.

EUROPA™ is a contemporary yet timeless exhibition, which is a clever combination of independent individual items building up to a whole work of art. EUROPA™ is also a continuation of FLICKWERK™ series and not only an exhibition title but also a statement. Therefore interpretation should be on the eye of the beholder. Regarding this fact MOSES & TAPS™ stick to French philosopher Bernard-Herne Levy’s statement: “Europe is not a place but an idea.”

There is a video on YouTube promoting the show with a great piece of Graffiti Art performance entitled MOSES & TAPS™ – BACKGROUND™, done and shot in Hamburg, Germany.

The exhibition takes place from June 16 to July 16, 2016 at Kolly Gallery in Zurich. (Facebook Event)

The artist MOSES & TAPS™ are currently on everyone’s lips. Their exhibition in Zurich is called EUROPA™. It is a contemporary yet timeless exhibition, which is a clever combination of independent individual items building up to a whole work of art. The exhibition called EUROPA™ is also a continuation of FLICKWERK™ series.

„EUROPA™ is not only an exhibition title but also a statement. Therefore interpretation should be on the eye of the beholder. Regarding this fact MOSES & TAPS™ stick to French philosopher Bernard-Herne Levy’s statement: „Europe is not a place but an idea.“

In 1994 MOSES™ and TAPS™ independent of each other began to produce graffiti in public space. They focused both on their common media: spray paint, colors and trains. In 2007 they founded the artist collective TOPSPRAYER™. Their first project INTERNATIONAL TOPSPRAYER™ included to spray 1000 trains in 1000 days using each other’s names and following both the rigid rules of graffiti and those of the authorities.

This project led to her first book INTERNATIONAL TOPSPRAYER™, one of the most successful graffiti art books on the market today. It is even used as a reference in the courtrooms. Thus TOPSPRAYER™ have actively influenced the court decisions in Germany. They are currently working on her third book A.L.I.A.S., in which will be revealed a third artistic personality ALIAS™.“

HAMBURG – MOSES & TAPS – Corporate Identity™ Exhibition http://ilovegraffiti.de/blog/2016/03/10/hamburg-moses-taps-corporate-identity-exhibition/ http://ilovegraffiti.de/blog/2016/03/10/hamburg-moses-taps-corporate-identity-exhibition/#comments Thu, 10 Mar 2016 18:24:50 +0000 http://ilovegraffiti.de/?p=24525 [more]]]> mt

MOSES & TAPS™ are currently the most prominent players of an artistic genre which is so current that it has no fixed name as of today; Urban Art, Post-graffiti, conceptual and performance art – everything is right and nothing fits.

The artistic careers of MOSES & TAPS™ began independently of each other in 1994. In 2007 Moses and Taps founded the artist collective TOPSPRAYER™. In 2011 their first book INTERNATIONAL TOPSPRAYER™ was published, and to date it is the best-selling German graffiti book available. In 2014 they published the limited photo book SAME SAME™, which sold-out in hours after release. Their productions and compilations are in strong contrast to the innocent and pleasing street-art-chic these days. Such productions like “The Painted Door” in which a train door is overpainted and reappears on an another part of the train and “THE WALL™” – the bricked up train door – are known to everyone. Following the exhibitions in Paris, San Francisco and the The Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany last year, the title CORPORATE IDENTITY™ for their first solo exhibition in 2016 could not have been more appropriate.

CORPORATE IDENTITY™ describes‚ “the totality of a brand or feature that characterizes a company and distinguishes itself from other companies”.

It amazes, by a superficial examination that artists themselves are assumed to have a special desire for freedom, but in fact have voluntarily defined restrictions and limitations.

Actually, however, the development of a corporate identity can also be accompanied by a focus of the essentials, i.e. core and essence of the contents point of origin. The essence of graffiti is the repetition of the personal alias. Through repetition, perfection is created and thereby allows further development and abstraction to occur. Repetition is very easily traced and leaves a simple trail behind. It is true that there is amusement in Moses and Taps´ Oeuvre for the observer, because of the weighty context the interaction with their captors represents. The artists decided not to make the classification too easy for the individual hunter. However they continued to devise new compilations that would undo the reasoning behind the classification. There was an exchange made, their book project INTERNATIONAL TOPSPRAYER™ for 1000 trains painted in 1000 days without further ado, their names.

Moses became TAPS, and out of Taps, MOSES™ was born. The elevated ™ symbolizes the name exchange, which winks at the conventional importance of an “unregistered trademark”. In 2010 they both consequently set about producing the series CORPORATE IDENTITY”.

The written portrayal of the pseudonym MOSES & TAPS™ was given way by the barely tangible representation of the colors, yellow and blue. At the same time this Corporate Design served as a conceptual link between the various series, creating a high degree of recognition.

In their exhibition CORPORATE IDENTITY™ which will take place in the Golden Hands Gallery in Hamburg, MOSES & TAPS™ will show a cross section of its current series as part of their corporate design. For obvious reasons MOSES & TAPS™ can not be officially present at the vernissage.

Interview MOSES/TAPS (english)

____________________________________________

“For me, writing is an expression of personality. Letters are therefore not just a way of commu- nicating content but also reject the soul of each writer and that is what I do, I ‘write’. My artistic origins lie in ‘Writing’, in our society known as ‘Graffti’. For over 20 years, I have actively and intensively grappled with the idea of letters; I have studied these in their basic typographical forms and as autodidact further developed them.

The name ‘Dare’ is the pseudonym that I adopted in 1986. After the many years when I wrote my name on walls all over the world, it seemed to me most honest to continue to write this name on canvas today. My paintings should be regard- ed as written self-portraits and if you believe that writing is an expression of personality, life can be found in each individual character.

This life, in turn, is me DARE! or Sigi von Koeding.”

(Abbildung oben: Buchcover)

„As the graffiti movement reached Europe from the USA in the mid 1980ties, Sigi DARE von Koeding, who was born in Basel (Switzerland), was one of the protagonists playing a major role. As one of the first writers, the network of friends he created stretched over half a continent. He further developed the painting of simple pseudonyms (or tags) and in this way established his own distinctive 3D-style that he later more and more often realised and perfected on canvas using a brush. In this way he built a bridge from the back-alley atmosphere typical of the scene to the art world of avant-garde galleries. Graffiti was now not just a special form of claiming territory by adolescents but, under the aegis of von Koeding, it became an urban spectacle with large-scale mural creations, often in combination with well-organised competitions or cultural festivals. On a much smaller scale DARE managed by the repeated transfer of his four letters onto canvas, just using layout, form and coloration,to give the observer an insight into his personality. In this way, until his death in 2010, he reached completely new audiences. At the same time, he achieved a change of perspective for people interested in culture, who would have automatically associated graffiti only with vandalism. Even today DARE enjoys the highest respect of his colleagues, as a pioneer of the sprayer generation, and in his hometown of Basel graffitis can be found that after 25(!) years have not been painted over. The book DARE to be different will be published in spring 2016 and documents in Europe for the first time graffiti and numerous sketches as well as a large part of Koedings multifaceted lifes work that he has left to us on canvas“

The project SIMILARITIES is the story of two graffiti artists, who have been working on walls and trains all over the world for almost 30 years and who are now, for the first time, leaving the big format to embark in something new.

However this is also a project about the spontaneous collaboration of two friends, who have a long history of working together. Both artists, like many other sprayers in their generation, feel a need for more freedom and the departure from the norms and rules that are often dictated by the style writing and graffiti culture.

For artists like AtomOne and WOW123 this „departure“ is an enthralling process, especially because both are not only representing a high quality form of classic graffiti, but have also majorly influenced its evolution.

After three decades in which most everything has been experienced and painted by the duo, it seems like it is time for new horizons, new ideas and concepts and more spontaneity. Fir this WOW123 and AtomOne have chosen the medium of canvas. Unlike the usual format of exterior walls and train carriages, painting on canvas restricts the size of the artwork as well as habitual expressive possibilities; forms and letters cease to be the only point of concern.

Conceptual and stylistic elements of both artists will make up the final work – the end result will always remain open.

AUSSTELLUNG – „Rough Cast“ in der Colab Gallery – WINTER 2015 http://ilovegraffiti.de/blog/2015/11/17/ausstellung-rough-cast-in-der-colab-gallery-winter-2015/ http://ilovegraffiti.de/blog/2015/11/17/ausstellung-rough-cast-in-der-colab-gallery-winter-2015/#comments Tue, 17 Nov 2015 11:21:19 +0000 http://ilovegraffiti.de/?p=23541 [more]]]> Am 21.
