Nice short Interview and Special with Amsterdam Graffiti OldSchool Writer Amer aka Demn of RTL and TVK Crew
Where and when did you start writing?
i started writing in 1980 in Amsterdam, graffiti was only about tags back than and a thing from the punks and hoolies, i was introduced by my nephew who was already all city writer than, he wrote Dr Smurry My First piece i did in 1985, i saw Style Wars and like many others it changed my life!
What were the first names you seen up back then?
When i started tagging, people like Dr Smurry, Dr Air, Tarantula, Ego among many others and the first pieces mid 80’s by the usa/ctk crew and Seen, Blade and Quick who came to Amsterdam in thoose early years for a gallery show. Quick left his mark in the city whith hughe throw ups, and Blade
and Seen did some great pieces back than in the Vondel park.
your first experience hitting a wall or trains and what was going through your head while doing it?
First experience is hard to recall.. it’s long ago and of the first once i didn’t even thought of taking a photo, you just thought it would be there for ever
and for trains.. i still love the years the amsterdam subway was a over easy playground early 90’sspecialy the years they could not clean the system and we had our own „little new york“ writers from all over the globe came to join and we made loads of friends with writers from other country’s which lead
in traveling to.
How did you find the name „Demn“. And what were you writing before that?
My original tag is Amer, which is stil use as tag.. but i got a little fed up with it so i tried different names beside it, one of them was Damn/Demn i like the letters in it a lot they can be shaped in so many ways it keeps my creative thoughts boiling, also the reason i like to play around with a „E“ instead of a „A“ and visa versa.
What were the earliest writing groups you were?
RTL (run the lines) together with Ens, Seh and Zeef in 1989, soon joined with like minded as Chas, Shei, Bus, Mets and VOB (visions of brotherhood)
a crew originaly from the LA area and two dutchies who joined them Phenc from the south of Holland and me. Nowadays it is the RTL (from which we blew the dust last year) BZ from my new hometown and TVK together with Babe, Rum and Duel.
