In ILOVEGRAFFITI Podcast Episode geht es in englischer Sprache weiter, mit Graffiti Writer BATES aus KOPENHAGEN. BATES sprüht seit 1984 und war schon früh einer der führenden Köpfe im Graffiti Subgenre Stylewriting. Er entstammt der zweiten Graffiti Generation in Kopenhagen und repräsentiert und kombiniert bis heute das traditionelle New Yorker Stilgefühl – mit einer Betonung des logischen Buchstabenverlaufs, der Dynamik und schwingender Rhythmen von Strichen und Pfeilen – mit einem dänischen und europäischen Sinn für Technik und scharfe Linien, graphischem Schwung und beinahe fehlerfreier Führung der Spraydose. Seit fast 40 Jahren zählt BATES bis heute zu den wichtigsten und einflussreichsten Graffiti-Künstlern weltweit!
Im Gespräch gehen wir mit ihm auf eine kurze Reise zum Planeten STYLE, sprechen über Einflüsse, die Vergänglichkeit von Graffiti und seine Verbindung nach Deutschland, wo er Anfang und Mitte der Neunziger Jahre sehr viele bemalte Züge, Wände und starken Eindruck hinterlassen hat. Vielen wird aufgefallen sein, dass BATES nicht selten Outlines und Sketche auf Wänden und Zügen sprüht, die nicht aus seiner Feder stammen. Coming from the second graffiti generation in Copenhagen, he still represents and combines the traditional New York sense of style – with an emphasis on the logical course of the letters, the dynamic and swinging rhythms of strokes and arrows – with a Danish and European sense of technology and sharp lines, graphic momentum and almost flawless handling of the spraycan. For almost 40 years, BATES has been one of the most important and influential graffiti artists worldwide!
In this conversation we go on a short trip to the planet STYLE, talk about influences, the transience of graffiti and his connection to Germany, where he painted a lot of trains, walls and made a strong impression in the early and mid-nineties. Many will have noticed that BATES often spraypaints outlines and sketches on walls and trains that weren’t out of his pen.
