AUSSTELLUNG – Dwane – Skalitzers Berlin

DWANE Writing my Name Until it Matters
Opening Saturday 10th November, 19-22Hr
Exhibition 14th November – 8th December 2012

Skalitzers Contemporary Art presents the first solo exhibition Writing My Name Until It Matters in Berlin by Swedish, Hungarian Polish artist DWANE.

Through exploration and experimentation the artist’s nom de plume is written hundreds, even thousands of times, deformed, built up and torn apart until it is barely recognisable, opening the door to new contextual possibilities.

This process eradicates the very essence of tagging, leaving no name to read and no typographic code to decipher. A process of “anti graffiti” painting utilising the most essential means of creating your graffiti identity and visual statement while destroying it at the same time. – DWANE

As a member of the notorious Vandals in Motion, DWANE has been laying the foundation for his latest series of works since he started writing in the mid 1980s in his home city of Gothenburg, Sweden. Almost 30 years later, in his first Berlin show, Dwane presents one immersive work: an abstract microcosm of the writer’s reality.

Join us with the artist at Skalitzers’ new Friedrichshain location for the opening night of the fifth show in the Fine Lines series, exploring the role of tagging within contemporary art.

SKALITZERS NEW LOCATION:

Skalitzers new 360sqm gallery in Friedrichshain is located at the former Railway Workshops on Revaler Strasse between Warschauer Strasse and Modersohnstrasse. The “Reichsbahnausbesserungswerk” (RAW) was formed in 1867 as the “Royal Prussian Railway Workshop Berlin II” for the repair of railway carriages, and used as a general industrial site by the DDR until 1989.

RAW was decommissioned in 1994 and abandoned for several years before becoming home to artists in the late 1990s. The area was acquired from the Deutsche Bahn in 2007 and the buildings will remain until its development later this decade. The gallery is located at the eastern end, directly opposite Gate 4.
