Letztes Jahr hatten wir über das Buchprojekt RARE SHOTS ON PLANET X, des Berliner Künstlers Matthias Gephart berichtet, welches nun durch erfolgreiches Crowdfunding auf der diesjährigen Buchmesse in Frankfurt vorgestellt wurde.

Matthias Gephart’s »Rare Shots On Planet X« transcends the boundaries of genre and style by combining high culture, pop pulture and counterculture: More than 25 Years of Graffiti, illustration, typography and photography in one book. What started as a crowdfunding project, has just been presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair and is now available.
RARE SHOTS ON PLANET X is an artist book with a difference. Funded by a crowdfunding campaign on the platform startnext.de, the bilingual (German/English) monograph was designed entirely by the author and outlines the work of Matthias Gephart over a period of more than two decades. On 416 pages, the lavish book speaks in text and picture about the diversity of an art activist, who loves to combine illustration, typography, Graffiti, collage and photography and makes virtuoso use of all kinds of mixed forms of graphic disciplines. Five chronological chapters illuminate Gephart’s artistic work from different angles. They show the beginnings and formative influence of the Graffiti scene in the 1980s, Dada and diverse subcultures as sources of inspiration, artworks for magazines and record labels, plus uncommissioned works for exhibitions. The book makes a strong impression particularly through the fusion of art and life, the harmonious coexistence of different genres and the overstepping of the boundaries between the fine and applied arts.
