BERLIN – WRITING GRAFFITI – Graffiti in Berlin 1983 – 2019

Wir wollen an dieser Stelle mal auf eine neue Publikation hinweisen, die vor einigen Tagen über Hitzerot herausgegeben wurde: “BERLIN: Writing Graffiti”. Das Buch erscheint zeitgleich als Katalog zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung, die seit 05.12.2019 in Brüssel zu sehen ist.

Wir selbst wissen, wie komplex es ist, die Berliner Writing Historie zu erzählen, daher wird auch diese Publikation Ausschnitte der Geschichte von Graffiti in Berlin seit 1983 zeigen. Eingeteilt in gleichgroße Kapitel pro Jahrzehnt. Es handelt sich um eine Photo-Ausstellung, so gibt es auch im Katalog zwar einleitende Texte für jedes Jahrzehnt und kleinere Einschübe, vorrangig sind jedoch Bilder zu sehen.

Wer sich für die Berliner Graffiti Geschichte interessiert, sollte sich das Buch hier im Hitzerot Shop bestellen. Und wir folgen dann kurz vor Weihnachten mit der dritten Staffel unserer Videoserie RISE -A HISTORY OF GRAFFITI WRITING – FROM NEW YORK TO EUROPE, in der es auch um Berlin gehen wird. Neben Amok, Adrian Nabi, Bas2, Wesp, Skume, Leroy und Hulk werden auch Inka und Level zu Wort kommen.

BERLIN: WRITING GRAFFITI

The photo exhibition BERLIN: Writing Graffiti at the Manufacture 111- Bruxelles presents a collection of circa 400 photographs in a chronological order and provides insights into the developments of graffiti writing in Berlin from the period from 1983 until today in the changing urban space.

The photographs are from private archives and by professional photographers from Berlin who deal with the subject artistically. The current exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue in three languages (German, English, French) published by the Berlin publishing house Hitzerot.

Berlin’s style writing culture has been strongly interwoven with the city’s upheavals for four decades. Created in the 1980s, the first pieces and pictures were sprayed mainly on the Berlin Wall in the western part of the city. Graffiti spread throughout the city during the 1980s and even more after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Because with the opening of the Wall the graffiti culture experienced a real boom in East and West Berlin, the scene grew, networked and the activities increased rapidly.
Graffiti has been a part of urban life ever since. In the early 2000s, new forms of styles developed from classical style writing, which were re-contextualized with unusual techniques and new materials. For almost 20 years Berlin has been marked by a strong urban change, which is also visible in the graffiti culture. Since 2010, trainwriting, performative actions and new forms of style writing have been increasingly observed. Graffiti Writing is constantly developing, not only on the level of image design, but also on the level of content, and Berlin remains a magnet for the international graffiti writer scene to this day.

The exhibition is made possible by the kind support of the Senate Department for Culture and Europe of Berlin, with the kind support of the Governing Mayor of Berlin within the framework of the city partnership between Brussels-Capital Region and Berlin, and international.brussels, Brussels Regional Public Service .

The initial exhibition « SORRY! | Bekanntes und Unbekanntes aus dem Berliner Graffiti Writing | Fotografisch festgehalten von 1983 bis heute » in Berlin at the Kornversuchsspeicher (01.06.2018 –24.06.2018) was as a project by Berlin Art Bang e.V., by Die Dixons in collaboration with Katia Hermann and Mark Straeck, with Kera Christian Hinz for the set-up design and Knorke for the graphic design. It was made possible by the friendly support of Kornversuchsspeicher and the Senate Department for Culture and Europe of Berlin.

The published resuming catalogue BERLIN: Writing Graffiti was made possible by Hitzerot and with the kind support of the Governing Mayor of Berlin within the framework of the city partnership between Brussels-Capital Region and Berlin.
