Pen&Paper with GOREY

Parisian-born artist Gorey spent his seminal years honing a despotic approach towards graffiti, infusing bold hand styles and illustrations that would later further his craft onto other artistic realms. Following his crew’s ethos of “Peace And Love” — P.A.L — Gorey and his cohort colored the capital with inventiveness from mid ’90s onwards, asserting themselves as a group not to be reckoned with. While unavoidable throw-ups and tags earned Gorey reputability amongst peers, his foray into fine art constructed narratives where a post apocalyptic society lived in a civilization of decay. Gorey’s unique spray painting techniques create dynamic illustrations where human recycling and self-sufficient living are compatible factors in his imaginative world. Such directional work recently took the walls at the “PALINGENESIS” exhibition at Klughaus, New York. While Gorey straddles the worlds of fine art and street art with ardent fluency, the typography, fonts and cartoon illustrations within his sketchbook nods towards his credentials as a graphic designer for streetwear imprint Woolf NYC. This latest Pen & Paper offers a glimpse at Gorey’s artistic dexterity, but for a more in-depth overview you’ll have to take to the streets of Paris and New York, where shop shutters, trucks and dim alleys become befitting canvases for Gorey’s work.
